Item Link"We hope that this community space will grow to be a highly valued asset within the community. That the Community Garden will encapsulate our community spirit, inclusiveness and care for the environment while supporting the sharing of knowledge, ideas and produce."
Our purpose is to create and build a community area, which is an environmentally sustainable space providing nutritious food and a sense of community, increasing and sharing community knowledge with the experience and benefit of hands-on learning. The aim is to work with all members of the community and like-minded social groups to encourage and increase positive social interactions and promote active participation in our community.
A committee of passionate volunteers are working with the council to ensure the garden is a success and will be at the heart of Kinross for years and generations to come.

The idea for a community garden in Kinross was born from the isolation and lack of connection during Covid 19 and a feeling that building something in the community, for the community was an ideal way for everyone to come together, make some new friendships, learn from others and of course enjoy growing our own garden.
Kinross Community garden became an official not for profit incorporated association in August 2021. A Federal Government Grant of $7500 provided the initial funds to get the garden up and running but there have been many other grants applied for and fundraising events that will ensure the continuity of the garden for years to come.
The first garden beds were installed on 16th January 2023 in relocatable wicking beds. The City of Joondalup has major works planned for the MacNaughton Park site around 2025 at which time our garden beds will be moved until the permanent site is available for us to settle in. Until then, the gardens have in their first months proved to be extremely bountiful with a wide variety of herbs and vegetables to enjoy.
We are very grateful for the support, encouragement and advice given by other community gardens with a special mention to the Duncraig Edible Garden.
It is our aim that as we develop and nurture this garden, in turn we will be developing and nurturing a place for people of all abilities and all walks of life to belong.
Who can Harvest? You can. The Kinross Community Garden is truly for the community and works on a Pay it Forward option. We ask that community members follow the simple traffic light harvest information sticks which are placed in the garden beds themselves and will show the Green “Ready to Harvest” or the Red “Not ready yet, please do NOT pick”. Information can also be found at the garden relating to How to Harvest – for example if taking some lettuce, please remove some of the outside leaves only, do not remove the entire plant from the bed. This means that the garden will continue to produce for more people to enjoy. Please, we ask that you only take what you need, leave enough of the plant so that it will continue to grow and remember that others will want to share as well.
There are many ways people can assist in ensuring our garden is successful such as turning up for our monthly gatherings which may include some light weeding or perhaps you may like to bake a cake for the morning tea to share or simply turn up for a chat. Maybe you can volunteer for the watering or fundraising teams. A simple, consistent way of supporting the garden is to collect and donate your aluminium cans and plastic bottles suitable for Containers for Change. Just drop them to us each month at our monthly gathering and this money is used for future crops and upkeep of the garden.
